Overview
There's no question that residencies and fellowships play an important role in developing advanced competencies in sports physical therapy. These programs provide opportunities to refine clinical skills under the mentorship of recognized experts in the field. However, pursuing post-professional training often requires a significant investment of time and resources, which can be challenging for many clinicians. The Sports PT Academy is committed to supporting professional growth through unique educational opportunities. The Kevin Wilk Traveling Fellowship, made possible through the generous support of Enovis, is one such opportunity. Historically, selected fellows traveled to three educational sites over a 7-to-10-day period, spending two to three days with recognized leaders in sports physical therapy. At each site, fellows typically participated in activities such as:
- Observation of the host therapist in the clinic
- Surgery observation
- Didactic learning experiences
- Social and networking activities to expand the fellows’ professional network
In previous years, up to six AASPT members participated in the fellowship annually. AASPT typically covered many fellowship-related expenses, resulting in little to no out-of-pocket costs for selected fellows, including:
- Airfare to/from home city to each site (AASPT will book travel for you)
- Lodging at each fellowship location (AASPT will book lodging for you)
- Transportation costs to/from host sites, hotels, and airports (AASPT will reimburse for reasonable expenses for travel)
- Meals during the fellowship (AASPT will reimburse for reasonable expense for travel; more details will be shared with finalists)
The Kevin Wilk Traveling Fellowship has provided participants with invaluable opportunities for learning, mentorship, and professional networking. AASPT encourages members interested in advancing their knowledge and connecting with leaders in the profession to watch for future fellowship announcements and application opportunities.
