Turner A. Blackburn Hall of Fame / Lifetime Achievement
To honor an American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy member whose contributions to the specialty of sports physical therapy through leadership, influence, and achievements have been demonstrated by frequent and sustained efforts for a period of not less than 25 years.
Nominate HereEligibility
- Nominee must be a physical therapist who is a current Academy member in good standing, and has been a member for a minimum of twenty-five (25) years.
- Nominee must be a physical therapist who is a current AASPT member and a member in good standing of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
- Nominee must have made frequent and sustained efforts to the advancement of the profession of physical therapy in the area of sports physical therapy in research/publication, education/teaching, and clinical expertise over a sustained period of 25 years.
- Nominee must have made distinguished contributions to the AASPT by serving in various roles (elected and appointed) over a sustained period of 25 years.
- Nominee must have national recognition by APTA members and by leaders outside of the physical therapy profession over a sustained period of 25 years.
- Members of the AASPT Executive Committee and the Awards Committee shall not be eligible for the award during their terms in office.
Selection Criteria
- The nominee shall have forged sustained relationships with other members of sports/health fields and promoted the profession of physical therapy and the specialty of sports physical therapy in a professional manner.
- Service to the AASPT through volunteerism by serving in a wide variety of roles (elected and appointed) over a 25 year period.
- Professional public visibility by long-standing contributions related to the practice of sports physical therapy, as demonstrated by publications, presentations, and invited lectures over a 25 year period.
- Contributions in each of the areas of administration, education (academic or continuing education), patient care, and research over a period of 25 years.
- The nominee shall have served as an accomplished role model and provided incentive for other members to grow and reach their highest potential.
- Previous recognition of contributions as demonstrated by other awards and honors.
- The nominee must be able to attend APTA Combined Sections Meeting for the award presentation.
- The nominee should have attended 20+ national meetings, inclusive of CSM, AASPT Annual Conference, APTA Annual Conference, or Team Concept conference.
Nomination Procedure
- At least one (1) but no more than two awards will generally be given in any year.
- Any member of the AASPT may nominate candidates for the award.
- A member may self-nominate.
All nominations should be submitted online through the Academy's website. Please do not submit materials via mail or email. - Nomination packets must include:
- Completed online nomination form; and
- Letter of support from the person nominating the member.
- The sub-committee will be selected by the current HOF members. The committee shall select a maximum of three (3) awardees who meet the scoring criteria minimum and make these recommendations the Awards Committee.
Selection Process
- An established rubric will be completed on each nominee and the a Review Committee will be tasked with scoring each nominee.
- The review sub-committee will be selected by the current HOF members Chair of the HOF Committee. The committee shall select a maximum of three (3) awardees who meet the scoring criteria minimum and, upon majority approval of all previous HOF members, make these recommendations the Awards Committee.
The Hall of Fame Lecture
The recipient shall give a brief acceptance for the award at the award ceremony. The recipient will be invited to write a written statement for potential publication by the AASPT.
Notification of the Award
The Academy President will notify the recipient of the award and obtain written confirmation of acceptance. The name of the recipient will be kept confidential until announced.
